A sand battery is a high-temperature thermal energy storage system that uses sand as the thermal mass to store and release energy. This innovative technology is designed to capture residual heat from industrial processes and renewable energy sources, storing it for later use, particularly during periods of high demand, such as winter months.
The sand battery stores energy by using a resistive wire or electric coil to heat sand to temperatures exceeding 600°C. Sand’s high thermal capacity allows it to retain heat for months without undergoing phase change, making it an efficient energy storage medium. When needed, cool air is blown through the hot sand, heating it for industrial or heating applications. The system is designed with insulation and recycled materials to minimize heat loss.
